Hamster Wheel Workout

Up and at it early today. The snow and ice derailed my typical Highbanks run and I opted instead for MD's legendary Sunday morning workout. 3 hours of spinning and then treadmill work. I give him grief about this workout not because I think it is physically challenging but rather because I thought it would be mind numbing. As it turns out, only the treadmill run is as bad as I thought it would be.

I was able to talk the early spin instructor into leave the videos running after the first class. We typically get either music videos or Tour de France videos for Spinning classes. So after an hour of watching U.S. Postal with the early class, I got to watch a bonus hour of Lance and the boys chase up a mountain, and then another hour of U.S. Postal wreak havoc on some skinny guys in pink. If you have to spin indoors for 3 hours, good entertainment is a must.

I got a good sweat going through the spinning sessions and the transition to running was much as I recall from my last race. When you get through the first 10 minutes, it starts to feel like a normal run on some tired legs. I listened to a Competitor’s Radio podcast with Chris McCormick to keep me entertained. I find that when I run for distance on the treadmill, I tend to steadily increase the pace just to get the workout over quicker.

Following yesterday’s long run and this morning’s ride and run, the legs didn’t have a lot of juice. I was not able to do as much as I normally do on “Leg Day”. The squats were a little lighter as were the one-leg split squat. I was still able to give the dead lift hell though.

Hamster Workout:
7:30-8:30 Spin Class
8:30-9:30 Easy spin until the next class
9:30-10:30 Spin Class
5 mile Treadmill Run
45 minutes leg strength training

I was targeting 45-65 miles according to my Boston Training Plan. I came up a mile short of the low end. This is a little disappointing but I think I can get back on track next week. The weather is supposed to be brutally cold so maybe I need to make better friends with the Treadmill.

Stats
5 miles (38:50)
163 lbs

Do not get too down CT. Things here are also bad. I had to actually break out my shorts and t-shirts for todays run. It was 66 degress when I went out at 12:30 this afternoon. Take care.
