Basically the training plan went to pieces this week. We are getting dumped on with snow and ice between periods of bitter cold. Sounds great doesn’t it? I swam on Monday morning but took Tuesday off completely. That’ right, I did nothing. I was going to go to the gym at lunch yesterday but ended up on a phone call and just didn’t feel like rushing over. I decided that if it wasn’t going to be a quality workout then it was probably just a waste of time. I flip-flop on that idea. Someday I think, “If there is no purpose in the workout, just take the day off” other times I think “just get moving a bit, at least you will boost the metabolism and it’s better than nothing”. Yesterday the first though won. Today the second thought won.
Despite record snowfalls, I made it to the gym this morning for a short treadmill run, a little spinning, and some general strength training. It probably won’t change my season but it felt good to move and fight back against the drudgery of winter.
The doctor examined my leg on Monday with an EMG. Think shock therapy and needles. The test sent current down my leg from different parts of my calf, thigh, and back. What the doctor discovered is that the current from the calf to numb area was good. The current from the thigh to numb area was weak, and the current from the back to the thigh was good. The conclusion therefore is a pinched nerve around my left knee. The cause could be a number of things but the most likely culprit is the way I cross my legs.
She (the doctor) says that anytime I am sitting and my foot goes asleep, it is pinching the nerve. Apparently, I have been doing this a little much and she believes it will heal with time. I will schedule a follow up with my general physician to see if he has any other treatment recommendations. In the mean time, no crossing my legs or sitting “Indian Style”.

I think the politically correct term is "criss-cross apple sauce". Good to hear that it is nothing serious. No worries about taking a day off. My theory is that "rest is the best exercise".
Take care.
