I'm Beat...oh and a Steelhead Recap

I don't just mean that in the "I'm tired" kind of way. I'm getting beaten into the ground by my training mates. The MR(cam) blog is suffering as am I...more on that in a bit.

First order of business is the Steelhead 70.3 triathlon. Despite my initial interest and paying of the race fee, I opted not to race. It was 6 days after Lake Placid and I didn't feel like going out and slugging through a slow race. I like to think of it as a $395 technical t-shirt of a race I didn't do. I'll wear it proudly. The rest of the crew did well.

The GF finished her first 70.3 in 6:38:19. Good solid swim, steady bike considering the headwinds and a 2:27 run. She was pleased.

MD got 3rd in his AG going 4:37:55 with a good strong 1:35 run. His bike split was really good and he put up his usually strong swim. He decided to pass on his 70.3 championship slot since he has a hard time keeping his head off the pavement in Clearwater.

GS was a little banged up coming into the race but put up a very impressive sub-5 and an gutsy run of 1:35 matching MD. He was hoping to make this his "A" race of the season but he's had some calf pain an opted to save a little for IMWI. He is a wise man.

Dr. DB had a similar day to GS but got edged out by 18 seconds. He gave up 3 minutes in the water, got it back on the bike (thanks to some awesome borrowed wheels), and a very solid 1:35. This was his first sub-5 so congratulations. I'm very proud of him. How he continues to put up good results with 2 little kids at home amazes me.

Funny that GS, MD and Dr. DB all ran 1:35. Must be in the water. Dr. DB probably would have matched GS with slightly faster transitions. Then again, they were not in the same heat so it's not like they were aware of where the other was. Actually, they have only met a few times. I'm probably the only one that cared since one is my brother and the other one of my regular training partners. I'm competitive even when it comes to that. Sad or intense? You decide.

The biggest news of the weekend might be that Nemo survived the swim. He is new to this aspect of the sport having previously only been a marathoner and duathlete. In fact, this was only his second triathlon. The guy has the legs for the bike and the run but we were all real pleased to see him make it out of the water. His 47:29 swim wasn't going to break any records but he ran a lot of people down later in the day. Well done everyone! Here are a few shots:

Dan heading out on the run. He said to me as he passed that he needed to run 1:40 to get his sub-5. He did me proud.

Here are the boys showing coach CT much respect. A nonchalant wave from GS, blatant ignoring from MD and Nemo showing me his nipple. Thanks for the showing your coach such high regard guys.

Ann posing outside of transition before the big day. She didn't look nervous.

So what have I been up to? Loafing a bit, eating pizza, drinking a few beers and thinking about what to do next. I ran 6 miles the Thursday after Lake Placid and felt pretty good. I ran 3 days last week (6, 6, 9) with one day being a good track interval. The miles were quick so I thought I was going to snap right back. I did a little 20 some miler with GS on the TT bike once again feeling pretty good. I was feeling recovered and set out for a good hard weekend to support GS and MD as they continue training for IMWI.

I was so wrong. Saturday was hot and GS brought some rain along, as usual. We were riding hills south of Columbus and I got my butt kicked. Last up every climb! I got my ass handed to me on Savage Hill, Revenge Hill, and some other unnamed hill. Even after we regrouped and started on the flat roads back to the cars, I got dropped again. I will admit that I shouldn't have been riding an 11-23 cassette but even so, I was on my road bike which tends to climb a little better. Nemo was kind enough to pull me in the last hour and laugh at my painful bitching as GS and MD put the hammer down at 4:30 into the ride. I was a whipped puppy. Not to be discouraged, I laced up the shoes for the transition run. The plan was 40 minutes. I ran 2 minutes and 30 seconds, turned around and walked back to my car.

Sunday was even worse, after deciding to skip out on the first 4 miles, I met MD, GS, and Nemo about 4 miles into their long run. I was feeling a little better but as we continued to run descending miles from 7:45 to 7:10, the wheels came off my cart. I walked most of the last 5 miles back to my car with some glute and hip pain. It was embarrassing. I was getting passed by kids with training wheels on the trail. I think I need to take a few days off and reset some goals for the rest of the season.

Stats
6 mile run on 7/29 (no timing)
6 mile run on 8/4 (no timing)
6 mile run on 8/5 (no timing)
9 mile run on 8/6 (intervals)
20 mile ride on 8/6
95 mile ride on 8/9
8 mile run on 8/10
152 lbs (dehydrated) - 1:59 lbs(full of pizza)

Just for the heck of it...this post gets the Daredevil seal of approval!

Excellent post. I too walked 5 miles back to my car on Sunday (16-21). My legs are falling apart at the seams.

You have had a great 12months, multiple pr's. You've earned some down time to say the least. I shut it down Sunday too, I was done!

Sunday was a bitch of a day, HOT, humid and windy don't make for a good combo for any outdoor workout. Thanks for the nice recap of the Steelhead Race. As pleased as I was with my time, LOL that MD finished 2 hours ahead of me . . .
