Can you PR a Training Run?

When it feels good, it feels good. More on that in a minute but first, I'm sure you are wondering what everyone is up to.

MD is in Wisconsin getting ready for IMMoo. This is his big race of the year. Everything else was just training and goofing. Oddly, for him constant AG wins, smashing us all on the bike, and running 3:09 marathons is not racing. It is just training. He will be "racing" in Madison. Good luck to the rest of the 40-45 Age Groupers looking for the elusive 9 Kona spots. MD is getting one. By the way, I think he is buying everything in Madison. So far he’s tweeted about a new aero helmet, new rear cassette, new compression socks, and maybe a new bike.

GS is doing a little recovery running but is scheduled to see a doctor next week about his ailing hamstring. I'm betting a few weeks of physical therapy and some Kettle Bells will have him setting some late season PRs. I don't think he will touch his post college 5K pace but anything a little longer, he could. If nothing else, he should get some AG wins. He has some unsettled business with 2009.

Nemo is just cruising along. After getting his Boston spot at the Flying Pig and showing the world that he won't drown, he has little to prove this year unless you count finding a date. He is kind enough to keep me company as I'm hunting for one more PR this year.

The GF is in full IM training mode. She sleeps, eats, and works out. No injuries or anything which makes me think she'll finish at IMAZ.

Dr. DB is considering a try at a Marathon PR in December. He has a new Garmin GPS and is posting the occasional update. He is looking good but I'll get a better look at his fitness when I get out there in a couple weeks.

Feebs has been pretty quiet. He is never one to talk much about training. He will be making his first trip back to Ohio since '89 in early October. Like Dr. DB, I'll get a better feeling for his fitness then.

Daredevil is all about Columbus Fall Challenge. A 2 day, 200+ mile hilly bike tour. Unfortunately, since I'm only running, I have not seen him in some time.

Double-D fell off the wagon...nuff said.

J-Fo is cleared to start running after an extended absence from last winter's surgery. He's working on the West Coast right now so until he starts running with us again, he probably isn’t training real consistently but just happy to be running. I did see his fiancĂ©e on the trail today. She could probably out run him right now but he could do more pull-ups and owns more sleeveless shirts.

Me? I'm rolling. After a little hiccup coming back from IMLP, I'm running well. This brings us to today’s run.

Nemo and I met at Wilson Bridge for an 18 miler. It was a nice cool morning to my liking. The first 2 miles were just shy of 8 minute mile. After that it seemed to be "game on". We slipped from 7:40 down to 7:00 as we got to the water stop turn around at Lane Avenue. As we started our return it was all 6:20 - 6:40. We stopped for some water again with 5 to go and I was feeling good. Good like I'm floating, Chariots of Fire, wish I was wearing a race number..."crazy good". I decided to see if I could run the rest in 6:30s. I didn't quite make it. The mile through Antrim Lake slowed me a bit with the gradual climb but still it was faster than normal. I finished in 2:06. My fastest time during Boston training was 2:09. I don't have recorded times from last fall but this may be a PR. Is there is such a thing on a training run? I guess this is why I started the blog. Before MRC(am), I didn't keep a training log very well.

MIT Army was out in full force. It is always nice to see them. Through the GF I've gotten to know a few of the masses and they usually have a few nice things to say. Today Nemo and I got a "nice legs" comment but I think it was from one of the guys...

I wrapped up the morning with an ice bath. Funny how one can get used to sitting in a bath tub full of cold water and ice. It is getting easier though. It used to take me like 30 minutes to fully sit down. Now I can get in like I'm jumping into the pool.

Time to trim the toenails...

Stats
18 mile run (2:06)
158 lbs...if I can get to 152lbs, I'll be wicked fast!

Actually the "nice legs" comment came from several girls and one guy. Also had a few girls asking if you had any single friends. I was telling them all about how cool Nemo is - now, if I can just remember which girl was asking me these things. . .

Quiet so as not to spill my secrets to fellow IMAZ competitors. I will fill you in on my regiment in hushed tones over drinks while in Columbus.
