Birthday Workout

Today is my 36th Birthday. There are many birthday traditions around the world. Here are a few that I thought about:

Africa - Initiation Ceremonies (Painful)

Bolivia - Dance the waltz and wear white (I can’t dance the waltz)

Brazil - Pulls on the earlobe (that doesn’t make sense)

Canada - Greasing the nose with butter or margarine (I did put on sunscreen)

Ecuador - Pink Dress (I think this only applies to little girl though)

Germany - Sweeping the stairs of city hall. When men reach the age of 30 and they still don't have a girlfriend that they have to sweep the stairs of the city hall. All there friends will throw rubble on the stairs and when you're finished they’ll throw some more rubble there. This way every girl can see that this man reached the age of 30 and still doesn't have a girlfriend and that he can clean a house very well! (I actually considered this but I have a GF)

Ireland - Birthday Bumps. The birthday child is lifted upside down and "bumped" on the floor for good luck. The number of bumps given is the age of the child plus one for extra good luck. (Unfortunately, this seemed to require strong men)

Japan - New Clothes (Seems simple)

Nepal -Mark on the forehead. A certain mixture of rice yogurt and color is placed on the birthday child's forehead for good luck. (Probably cause a breakout)

English - The cake is served with ice cream (I’m trying to loose weight)

Russia - Birthday Pies (see previous)

United States - Cake, candles, and song

None of these really fit my needs or mood. Instead I opted for this swim workout to celebrate the start of my 37th year on this (or any other) planet.

37 x 100 on 2:00

To keep it interesting and new I decided to only do flip turn. I mentioned in an earlier post that these were useful because they are supposed to make me a better swimmer. Now I messed up the timing on 2 of them early in the set. I needed a breath just as it was time to flip so instead of 111 flip turns it was only 109. It turned out to be a little easier than I thought it would be. I may try to start throwing in some flip turn in my masters training on Monday and Friday. There is a very good possibility that I’ll run in to lane mates.

I topped that with 2 loops at Highbanks for 8 miles over lunch. I know that 8 is not related to 36 in any way but 36 miles was a little much. Coincidently and unintentionally, I ran it on 1:12 (average 36 minutes each lap). So there! I pulled the old "wet wipe" post run clean up and made it back in the office. Hopefully I won't stink. The "wet wipe" clean up is pretty easy to do on cold days like today but tough to pull off in July

One other note, MD sent me a text this morning that he was taking the 9:30 spinning class today. That means he is only 28 hours late for our meeting yesterday morning!

Stats
3700 yard swim
8 mile run (1:12)
162 lbs

Happy belated birthday! We have a special celebration planned for you when you find your way to our sunny patch. It includes sushi, wine, and a prince cake. Oh yes, Dan, Mario and I will be turning you upside down to "bump" your head on the ground.
