Guess What I Overheard While Running

OK, I'll get to what I overheard in a bit.

I've given up on riding hard for a little while. It is probably best. I'm not really looking forward to riding to Bellefountaine by myself any more this year. I like riding with the boys, but alone is done for a bit. It is time to focus on running until after the 1/2 marathon or until I'm hurt. With that mindset, I started the week with a 9 mile run from Wendy's on Monday morning. I forgot how big the hill is on Emerald Parkway but I wanted to run well since I'm on the road this week and there is never any telling how that will go.

Tuesday evening, I drove to a riverfront park in Cincinnati on a tip I got for a good route. Unfortunately the Reds had a home game and parking was $5. There is no reason to pay that if I'm not using the lot to go to the game. I proceeded to drive around for about an hour before giving up on it and deciding to make it a "rest day". Glad I ran longer on Monday.

Wednesday morning I did the a little 3 miler from the hotel. If all went right I'd be home Wednesday night and have quality running the rest of the week. As luck would have it, I got out of Kentucky by 1:00 and I was home by 3:30. After a quick change of clothes, I was at my favorite running spot by 4:15.

So I'm rolling along at Highbanks. 2 loops seemed in order. I saw a bunch of high schoolers on the path this afternoon. After a brief chat with the only person able to shave, I found out it was Olentangy High School Cross Country team. So as I pass by one of the groups I overheard something that gives me hope for the potential rebirth of Americans at Ironman. One boy says to the other "...the bike really doesn't mater much, the winner at Ironman is always the fastest runner...". I hope some day when I qualify for Ironman in the 60-64 age group, I see this kid coming in to the Queen K as I get off my bike.

Stats
Monday: 9 mile run (1:12)
Tuesday: Rest Day
Wednesday: 3 miles in the morning, 9 in the afternoon
158 lbs

LOL! First, I am impressed that highschoolers are talking about Ironman - I didn't even know what it was until I was in my late 20's. Second, I believe you will do that someday . . .
