Thursday Tempo & Sharon Woods Analysis

After a very good attendance at the track on Tuesday, Thursday's turnout was slim. MD was back trying to take over the world, GS had a morning appointment and Nance... well, thoughts on him at the end.

This morning was a tempo run and tempo is always better when someone is there to help carry the pace. My trusty Nemo was there since he rarely misses a weekday morning run. Dude is the Tonto to my Lone Ranger. Our plan called for 2 x 15 minutes at Marathon Pace with 5 minutes recovery and a total of 10 to 12 miles. It went just as planned as you can see here. The tempo miles were about 6:40 - 6:55. The end of the second interval (10th split) seems off to me. I didn't think we slowed down that much in the last .24 miles. In any case, I'm good with it.

Now on to the analysis. Last Wednesday GS mentioned that we were "2 minutes quicker" than the previous week. GS is much better at remembering times for given runs. It's probably because he keeps a running log and is diligent about it. So I started thinking about it and went back to my logs and did some research as well. Here are the last 4 runs at Sharon Woods. This particular analysis is interesting because all of these runs were started around noon and the temperature was between 75 and 82.

Fri, Aug 20 - 52:03 (GS, CT)
Wed, Aug 25 - 50:31 (GS, MD, CT)
Fri, Aug 27 - 51:55 (GS, CT)
Wed, Sep 1 - 48:04 (Nemo, MD, CT)

I've long suspspected that when Nemo and MD get together the run is always faster. You can see GS and I are pretty consistent but with MD it was a little quicker. We can call that the 'MD effect'. But what is astounding is what happens when MD and Nemo are together. Between Nemo's 'half step' habit and MD charging up every hill like there are KOM points, it was a very different run. It always seemd faster when these 2 are together. We now have proof. This is not normal fitness gain. In 11 days we ran 4 minutes faster over six miles! The only other explanation is that maybe GS and I just get chatty when we run together. Never run with MD and Nemo on your easy day.

And now back to Mr. Nance...so we were talking about Nance the other morning in his absence. Not really behind his back, but just about his running. The guy should have a good fall since he is finally getting back to the track. Because he is more of a regular participant, we need a nickname for him. I was going to call him "I'm out", since that is the most common text message I get from him. That seemed a little rough since he does show more often than not. Nance will miss 1 track workout and 1 tempo run about every 3 weeks. My phone will vibrate late at night or early in the morning with "I'm out" if he planned to be there but opted to sleep. He was gone about every third weekend this summer as well. But even more convincing is that on 6 x 800 track workout, he does 4 x 800. On a 3 x 2000 track workout, he does 2 x 2000. Just a coincidence? I think not. Ladies and Gentlemen, I give you "Mr. Two-Thirds"

I can't argue with too much from what you've said. Atleast i wake up at 4a and tell you I'm not coming. And to make an arguement, I ran all 3x2000m runs (if you consider that running and if you don't, I retract this part of my statement). I also ran 5 of the 6 800's. So either Mr. Five-Sixths or I'm out. Anyway, I'm out.

XOXO,
Nance
